A diagnosis of cancer can
be a painful, lonely experience. When faced with overwhelming adversity and
challenge, we often find that the smallest gestures make the biggest impact on
our lives. That’s why
CREW
(Commercial
Real Estate Women) Pittsburgh developed the New You
Satchel of Caring Program in 2003.
Through its New You
Program, CREW uses high quality donated fabrics to stitch unique Satchels of
Caring, which are filled with therapeutic and inspirational contents, such
as a soft turban, scarf, support literature, a journal donated by CREW members
and friends, and many other items.
Since the Program’s
inception in 2003, more than 3,100 of our Satchels of Caring have been
distributed to women undergoing chemotherapy. In 2008, the CREW New You Program
distributed over 1,100 satchels and anticipates increasing this distribution to
1,000 in 2009.
There is no application process and no charge
to receive a Satchel of Caring, just a request to CREW from the intended
recipient or a friend or organization on behalf of the recipient. CREW covers
the $29 production cost of each Satchel by fundraising and donations.
The New You Program is about shared
experiences, hands-on participation and support of women.
CREW Pittsburgh
Foundation continues to expand its Program through the participation of
volunteers from middle schools, high schools, colleges, sewing organizations,
youth organizations and CREW members in Allegheny County and the surrounding
areas. Click here for more information on how to
get involved.
CREW Pittsburgh Foundation
frequently has informational displays at schools, student career fairs, and
public events to attract volunteers, as well as get the word out about our New
You Program to women undergoing chemotherapy and the organizations that support
them.
CREW has participated in the North Hills
Junior High Celebration of Learning, the American Cancer Society’s Survivor Day,
the
National Ovarian Cancer Coalition's
Walk for the Whisper, Student Career Days, the Annual District 7300 Interact
Conference, and the South Hills Relay for Life. Please contact us if you
are interested in having a display at your event.
